What we get up to
"We want people are encouraged to have balanced lives with time for others rather than being sucked into an endless round of church activities. We’re about getting into the communities we inhabit and bringing Jesus’ love to them."
So what goes on? In short lots and lots! We have a strong emphasis in getting stuck in into various projects running in the local community so first and foremost we are involved (both paid and unpaid) in charities working with asylum seekers, with young offenders, mentoring, community education projects, and various local sports clubs. We also run two large community parties in the year, a summer barbecue and a Christmas party. Our Sunday pattern is as follows:
First Sunday: Is our monthly celebration which takes place at 4:30pm in St John’s Church Hall. As a busy community we try and make this the priority to attend. We try and make it child friendly and usually involves communion and creative worship of different kinds.
Second Sunday: We meet again at 4:30pm but at Fran’s, No 43 Montpellier Road, this is generally has a bible study focus as the moment we are looking at what it means to be ‘Living the Jesus Way’.
Third Sunday: We again meet at Fran’s, No 43 but a little earlier usually about 1:30pm have lunch together, communion, and pray for each other. On occasion we will spend a little longer together and have what we call ‘stakeholder’ days, which are occasions where we reflect and pray for the church and feedback peoples thoughts as to what is going on.
Last Sunday of the month (whether fourth or fifth): We don’t meet, we find people want to be able to go away for weekends, see family and this gives them the space to do that; a church Sabbath if you like!
Where there’s an extra Sunday in the month we do various things and are open to lots of ideas/offers to co-ordinate. Picnics, trips to the sea side, brunch & newspapers with neighbours, anything really!
During the week we have Journey Groups. These are a place for building closer relationships and supporting/helping equip each other to live as Christians. They meet either weekly or fortnightly.
Occasional mid-week Learning Hubs tackle tough questions or explore issues around being Christians 24-7 including subjects like Christians in the workplace, Christians & politics, and genocide in the Old Testament! There are lots of other things that go on through out the year including weekends away, prayer parties, and much, much more.
